A Fifth Grade Story - Yucaipa, CA
There’s something special about fifth grade. It’s that in-between year, not quite little anymore, but not yet racing toward the independence of middle school. When I met this sweet girl for her back to school mini session in Yucaipa, I could see that beautiful mix of confidence and curiosity written all over her face.
These quick 5-10 minute sessions are some of my favorites. They move fast, but that’s part of what makes them special. There’s no pressure, just genuine smiles, quick giggles, and the kind of easy laughter that happens when kids are given permission to just be themselves.
And of course, we couldn’t leave out Fonzi, the family’s loyal companion and unofficial school mascot. He trotted into a few frames with his signature charm, sitting proudly with his girl as if he knew this photo would matter someday. Pets always add something special to these moments, reminding us that family comes in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes, with wagging tails.
As always, we used my nearly 100-year-old antique school desk, a piece that’s become a little bit of history in every back to school photo I take. Its worn wood and iron frame have held decades of stories, and somehow, every child who sits behind it seems to add their own chapter.
This session took place in one of my favorite spots in Yucaipa, CA, surrounded by golden light and quiet old oak trees, the perfect mix of nostalgia and nature. It’s everything I love about being a Yucaipa and Inland Empire family photographer: capturing simple, beautiful moments that say so much without trying too hard.
When you look back on these photos years from now, they’ll remind you not of perfect poses or polished smiles, but of who your child was right in this moment. The start of another school year, a beloved dog by their side, and a heart full of hope for what’s ahead. Because these aren’t just school photos. They’re memories that whisper, “this is who you were.”
With love & grace,
Heidi
