Behind the Scenes of How I Choose Family Photo Locations - Redlands, CA

One of the questions I get most often, especially from parents planning family photos for the first time, is about location. Where will we go. Will it be crowded. Will it work with kids. Will the light be good. It’s a good question. And it’s one I’ve put a lot of thought into over the years.

When you’re already juggling schedules, school drop offs, and the everyday mental load of parenting, the last thing you need is one more decision to stress about. That’s why location is something I take off your plate.

Why I Don’t Publicly Share Exact Location Names

Most of the outdoor spaces I photograph in Redlands and throughout the Inland Empire aren’t places I stumbled on by accident. They’re locations I’ve spent years scouting, testing, and photographing in real sessions. While some of them are obvious local locations that are well known, I don’t publicly share the names of most of these spots, and that’s intentional. Once locations are shared widely, they tend to get overcrowded, which changes the entire experience. What was once quiet and calm becomes distracting and rushed. For families, especially those with young kids, that calm matters. Instead of sending you on a hunt for the “perfect” place, I focus on choosing spaces that photograph beautifully and feel comfortable to be in.

Every Location Has Been Personally Tested before i offer it to clients

I don’t bring families to locations I haven’t already spent time in myself. Every spot on my location list has been:

  • Photographed at sunset
  • Tested for light consistency
  • Used in real family sessions
  • Chosen for how kids can move and explore

Light behaves differently in every space. Some areas look great, but fall flat at golden hour. Others only work during certain seasons. I take note of all of that so you don’t have to. If a location doesn’t meet my standards for light, space, and overall feel, it doesn’t make the list.

When Locations Are Shared

Once your session is booked and your deposit is paid, I send over my curated location list. Right now, that includes over a dozen outdoor options across Redlands and the surrounding Inland Empire, and I’m always scouting new spaces as the seasons change. This way, you’re choosing from places I already know will work. You’re not guessing. You’re not hoping. You’re simply picking the setting that feels most like your family.

Why This Matters for Your Session Experience

The right location sets the tone for everything else. Quiet spaces allow kids to relax and explore. Open areas give families room to move without feeling watched. Thoughtful lighting means we don’t have to rush or force moments. When the environment feels easy, the photos follow. That’s how sessions feel less like a checklist and more like time together.

A Redlands Session Example

Many of my family sessions in Redlands take place in historic outdoor spaces with mature trees and lush greenery that stay beautiful year round. These areas soften the light at sunset and create a timeless backdrop that doesn’t distract from the people in the frame. They’re not trendy. They’re not overdone. They’re familiar in the best way. And they photograph beautifully, every time.

Choosing With Care

I believe families deserve more than a random meeting spot and crossed fingers. Choosing locations thoughtfully is part of how I care for the experience as a whole. You show up with your people. I take care of the rest. And if you’re planning spring family photos in Redlands or anywhere in the Inland Empire, that intention is already built into the process.

Heidi
