How to Prepare Older Kids and Teens for Family Photos That Feel Natural and Fun - Redlands, CA

If you’ve ever tried to get a smile out of your pre-teen or teenager, you know it’s a little different than when they were five. They’re finding themselves, becoming more self-aware, and maybe a little less eager to strike a pose on command. And that’s perfectly okay. As a family photographer serving the Inland Empire, Yucaipa, Beaumont and Redlands areas, I’ve learned that working with older kids isn’t about forcing smiles, it’s about connection, trust, and letting their personalities shine. Here are a few ways you can help prepare your older kids for your upcoming session so everyone (yes, even your teen!) enjoys the experience.

1. Involve Them in the Planning

Older kids love to feel included, and that starts with letting them have a say. Invite them to help pick their outfit, pick a location, or choose a few poses or ideas they’d love to try. When kids feel like they’re part of the process, they show up with more excitement and confidence and that always translates beautifully in photos.

2. Keep It Low Pressure

Teenagers often worry about how they’ll look or what others will think. Remind them this session isn’t about perfection, it’s about capturing your family just as you are. You can say something like, “We just want to get a few photos that show how awesome you are right now, no stiff smiles required.” As your photographer, I’ll handle the posing, prompts, and gentle direction to help everyone relax. The best images come when everyone forgets about the camera and just enjoys the moment.

3. Choose Outfits That Feel Authentic

This is where a little compromise goes a long way. Let your teen wear something that feels like “them,” as long as it complements your family’s color palette. Neutrals, denim tones, and soft earth shades photograph beautifully against our Inland Empire backdrops, especially here in Redlands and Beaumont where warm, golden light fills the evening sky. If your teen wants to wear something trendy, that’s okay! We can balance it with more timeless textures or layers on everyone else. The goal isn’t to match, it’s to coordinate and feel comfortable.

4. Set Expectations Early

Give your teen a heads-up that sessions usually last about 20–60 minutes depending on what you’ve booked, and remind them that we’ll move quickly. When they know what to expect, it helps reduce resistance and keeps things smooth. Encourage them to bring water, a jacket if it’s chilly, or even a favorite song playlist for the car ride over. Small comforts make a big difference in attitude and energy during the shoot.

5. Let Them Just Be

The best photos happen in the in-between moments, the eye roll, the smirk, the real laughter between siblings. Don’t stress about perfect smiles or everyone looking directly at the camera. Let me guide the flow, and trust that those candid, genuine interactions are the ones you’ll treasure most years from now. Remember, this stage of life (the one where your little one towers over you and pretends not to need you) will be gone before you know it. Photos of this season matter. They tell a story of independence, growth, and love that still runs deep.

Family sessions with teens and pre-teens don’t have to feel forced or awkward. With a little preparation and the right mindset, they can actually be some of the most meaningful photos you’ll ever take together.

Whether your family calls Yucaipa, Redlands, Beaumont, or anywhere in the Inland Empire home, my goal is to make your photo experience relaxed, authentic, and fun...even for the toughest-to-crack teens.

See you soon,

Heidi
