Setting Expectations for Color, Weather, and Light
Fall looks a little different in the Inland Empire than it does in other parts of the country, and that can actually work in your favor once you know what to expect. If you’d rather scroll straight to the photos, you can head down below.
Fall Color Isn’t the Main Focus Here
If you’re expecting bright orange and red leaves everywhere, that’s usually not what you’ll find locally. Fall here tends to be more subtle. Grass often turns a soft yellow, and many trees stay green longer depending on how cold the weather gets. For most local families, this isn’t a surprise. It’s just part of what fall looks like here. Every once in a while, we’ll come across a spot where the leaves shift more, but it’s not something to rely on when planning. Instead of focusing on bold color changes, sessions here lean more into warm tones and a neutral palette that works well year-round.
The Lighting Is What Makes Fall Stand Out
What we may lack in dramatic color, we make up for in light. Fall tends to bring some of the best lighting of the year. September and October still have long evenings, and the sun takes on a deeper, golden tone that photographs really well. It gives everything a warmer feel without needing a lot of extra styling. Because the time change doesn’t happen until early November, we still have great light to work with through most of fall sessions.
Weather Can Be Mixed, But Still Works in Your Favor
Fall weather here is not always predictable, but it’s usually manageable. September can still feel like summer, with some sessions happening in pretty warm temperatures. October tends to be a mix of warm and mild days, and by November it can go either way depending on the year. Some seasons stay comfortable, while others bring a little rain or cooler weather.
Wind is usually the bigger factor to keep in mind during fall sessions. It doesn’t happen every time, but it’s something I always watch for leading up to session dates. Overall, the weather still allows for a lot of flexibility, and it’s rare for it to be too cold to shoot comfortably.
Why Location Choice Matters More Than Leaves
Because fall color isn’t the main feature here, location plays a bigger role in the final look of your photos. For fall mini sessions, I offer a few different options so families can choose what fits their style best. Open fields with trees tend to feel simple and timeless. Apple orchards bring in a more traditional fall look earlier in the season. Later in the year, Christmas tree farm sessions offer a more seasonal option for families planning holiday cards. Each one gives a different feel, even without dramatic color changes.
What to Expect When Booking
Most families I work with are local, so expectations are usually already aligned. I always provide example images for each location before booking so you can see exactly what the setting looks like.
As your session date gets closer, I keep an eye on the weather and will share updates so you can adjust outfits if needed. Adding or removing layers can make a big difference depending on the temperature that day. If weather becomes an issue, like rain or strong wind, I’ll always do my best to reschedule when possible.
Bringing It All Together
Fall in the Inland Empire is less about bold color changes and more about light, warmth, and simple surroundings that photograph well. Once you know what to expect, it becomes easier to plan a session that fits your style without chasing something that doesn’t naturally happen here. For families in Yucaipa, Oak Glen, and throughout the Inland Empire, that usually means leaning into what this season does best instead of trying to recreate something from somewhere else.
If you’re planning fall family photos and want help choosing the right location or timing, I’m always happy to walk you through what will work best for your family.
