What to Wear to a Fall Family Session - Cherry Valley, Ca
If you’ve ever stood in your closet the week of your session thinking, “why is this harder than it should be…” you’re not alone. Figuring out what to wear for family photos is one of the most stressful parts for most moms. Not the kids. Not your husband. You. So let’s make this simple. I help mom's all over the Inland Empire when they book a family session with me. I never leave you high and dry. The family that I'm featuring here did an amazing job of styling their outfits for their fall family photos with me.
Start With Your Outfit First
I know it’s tempting to shop for everyone else first, but don’t. Pick your outfit, and build around it.
Because if you feel off, uncomfortable, or like something isn’t “you,” it shows in the photos. And no one wants that after putting in all this effort. Find something you feel good in first, then coordinate everyone else around you.
Stick to Colors That Actually Work Outside
Fall sessions don’t need to mean pumpkin orange and matching flannel. The easiest way to make everything look good together is to stay in a color family. A quick search on Pinterest can be super helpful when deciding on a color palette.
Think:
- creams
- soft browns
- olive or muted greens
- jean or soft blues
- warm neutrals
- a little bit of rust or deep red
These tones work really well with outdoor light and blend naturally with the environment instead of competing with it. You don’t need everyone in the same color. You just want it to feel like it goes together without trying too hard.
Don’t Match. Coordinate.
Matching outfits used to be a thing. We’re not doing that anymore. Instead of everyone wearing the exact same colors, aim for outfits that feel connected.
For example:
- Mom in a flowy neutral dress
- One kid in a soft pattern
- One kid in a solid color pulled from that pattern
- Dad in something simple that ties it together
That’s how you get photos that feel effortless instead of staged.
Texture Makes a Bigger Difference Than You Think
This is one of those things people don’t realize until they see it in photos. Flat fabrics can look kind of dull. Adding texture gives your images more depth without doing anything complicated.
Think:
- knits
- linen
- denim
- subtle layers like a cardigan or jacket
Layers and texture add interest without needing bold patterns or bright colors.
Be Real About Your Kids
Your kids are going to run. Sit on the ground. Probably ignore you at some point. So dress them like real kids. Comfortable clothes that they can move in will always photograph better than something stiff or itchy that they hate. If they feel like themselves, everything goes smoother. Aways buy their clothes in the size they fit right now. Not a size they can grow into. Oversized or overly baggy shirts and pants tend to look sloppy.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
This is the one people forget until the last second. WIth me, we are always shooting outdoors, so skip anything that doesn’t make sense for the location. Heels in a field. Bright sneakers that don’t match anything. Those stand out in a way you don’t want. Simple boots, neutral shoes, or something that blends in will always photograph better.
You Don’t Need to Overthink This
This is the part I always remind my clients of. Your photos are not about your outfits. They’re about your people. The outfits just support that. They don’t need to carry the whole thing.
If You’re Still Not Sure
Send me what you’re thinking. Seriously. I send every client a "What to Wear Guide", so don't panic.
Most of my clients text me outfit options, screenshots, or photos laid out on their bed, and I help them pull it together. You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Let’s Make This Easy
If you’re planning a fall session in Beaumont, Yucaipa, Redlands, or anywhere in the Inland Empire, I’ll help you with all of this before your session with me even happens. So by the time you show up, you’re not second guessing anything.
If you’re ready for family photos that feel easy and actually look like your life, you can inquire about your session with me here.
