Big Brother in the Making: Capturing This Sweet In-Between Stage for Families in the Inland Empire

There’s something really special about the moment a child becomes a big sibling. It’s that in-between stage, not the only child anymore, full of curiosity, pride, and a little bit of uncertainty too. As a family photographer in the Inland Empire, I see this season all the time with families in Beaumont, Yucaipa, Redlands, and surrounding areas. And it’s one of the most meaningful stages to document.

Because once the baby arrives, everything shifts.

Why This Stage Matters More Than You Think

When families think about photos, they usually focus on:

But this moment, right before everything changes, often gets overlooked. And honestly, it’s one of the most emotional. This is when your child is still your “only” and they are starting to understand what’s coming. They might start showing excitement (and sometimes big feelings) about becoming a big sibling and capturing this stage gives you something you won’t be able to recreate later.

What These Sessions Actually Look Like

If you’re imagining stiff poses or forced smiles, don’t worry, that’s not what this is. These sessions are relaxed and connection-focused. I'll let your child explore and play, while also capturing moments with mom or dad. We can include little interactions that show their personality, talk about the baby in a natural, low-pressure way, because the goal isn’t perfection it’s authenticity.

Including Your Growing Family

If you’re expecting, this is also a beautiful way to include:

  • A growing baby bump
  • Natural connection between siblings (even before they meet)
  • The anticipation of what’s to come

Tips for a Smooth Session

If you’re thinking about documenting this stage, here are a few simple tips:

Keep expectations low. Your child doesn’t need to “perform.” The best moments happen naturally. Let them lead. If they want to run, explore, or stay close, I'll follow their energy.

Keep outfits simple. Neutral, comfortable clothing helps keep the focus on connection.

Trust the process. You don’t have to manage everything, I’ll guide you the whole way.

These Are the Photos You’ll Look Back On

After the baby arrives, life moves fast. And while newborn photos are beautiful, there’s something incredibly meaningful about remembering life before the new baby arrives.

Let’s Capture This Season

If you’re expecting and have a little one about to step into their new role, this is the perfect time to document it. I photograph families across Beaumont, Yucaipa, Redlands, Calimesa, and the greater Inland Empire with a relaxed, natural approach that keeps things easy for everyone. If you’re ready for a session that feels like real life (not forced poses), you can inquire about your session here. I love taking family photos in the Inland Empire.
