5 easy tips for making a maternity session perfect - Yucaipa, Ca
There are some sessions that just stay with you, and this one is definitely one of them. I’ve known this sweet mama for almost ten years, and every year she books a family session with me. When I got her message saying she wanted to book a maternity session, my heart skipped a beat. She’s already such an incredible mom, and getting to capture this next chapter as she prepared to welcome baby number two was such a gift.
We planned her session right in the middle of summer, which can be tricky in Southern California. But I knew my favorite mountain river spot above Yucaipa would be the perfect solution. The temps are usually at least ten to fifteen degrees cooler than the valley, and the fresh mountain water brings a level of comfort that’s hard to beat. She wore the most beautiful white dress with delicate floral accents, and honestly, she looked absolutely radiant against the backdrop of the trees and flowing water.
Since we had a full hour, we took our time exploring, waiting for that golden light that never disappoints. By the end, we had a gallery filled with soft, glowing images that I know she’ll treasure forever.
5 Tips for a Perfect Maternity Session
If you’re planning your own maternity session, here are a few things that can make the experience smooth, enjoyable, and picture-perfect:
1. Book Between 28 and 34 Weeks
This is the sweet spot for maternity photography. Your bump is beautifully rounded and prominent, but most moms are still feeling fairly comfortable. You’re usually past the morning sickness stage and not yet in the heavy discomfort of those last few weeks.
2. Choose Neutral or Soft Colors
Neutrals, earth tones, and soft pastels photograph beautifully outdoors. They keep the focus on you and your growing bump instead of drawing attention to bright or distracting colors. Bonus: neutrals also pair effortlessly with the natural landscapes here in the Inland Empire.
3. Pick the Right Location
The location sets the entire mood for your session. Whether it’s a cool mountain river like this session in Yucaipa, or a golden field at sunset in Redlands, I have a location list for you to choose from that features only the best spots here in the Inland Empire. Choosing a place that feels peaceful and comfortable will make a huge difference in your photos.
4. Plan for Comfort
A long, flowy dress is always a good choice, not only because it photographs beautifully, but also because it allows you to move, sit, or walk around without feeling restricted. Bring along a pair of comfortable shoes to slip on in between photos if we’re exploring a bigger location.
5. Trust the Process
It’s easy to feel nervous in front of the camera, especially when pregnancy can make you feel less than glamorous some days. But trust me, my job is to guide you, pose you naturally, and make sure you feel confident. All you have to do is relax, enjoy the moment, and let me do the rest.
