A Quick Guide to Helping Dads Show Up Calm for Family Photos

Let’s be real, getting your family ready for a photo session can feel like a lot. And sometimes, the kids aren’t the ones dragging their feet. I’ve been doing family photography here in the Inland Empire for years now, and I can’t tell you how many moms quietly pull me aside and say something like, “So… he’s not really into this.”

And hey, I totally get it. Most dads don’t wake up excited to smile in front of a camera for an hour. But with a little prep, a tiny mindset shift, and maybe even a bribe (yes, even for the grown-ups), your family session can be smooth, relaxed, and even *dare I say* fun.

So if your husband isn’t super excited about your upcoming outdoor family session, here are a few things that can help:

1. Talk about what to expect

If this is your first session, or your first time wrangling toddlers in front of a lens, just having a quick convo ahead of time goes a long way. Let him know how it’ll all flow. I’ll guide you, I’ll direct the kids, and it’s not going to feel stiff or overly posed. No fake smiles required.

And if there’s a little bribery happening behind the scenes (ice cream after, anyone?), let him in on the plan so he can help keep the kids on track.

2. Let him know the kids might be… well, kids

It’s totally normal for the little ones to melt down, run wild, or refuse to smile at first. It’s also totally fine. I promise I’ve seen it all and I’ve got tricks up my sleeve. Let your partner know ahead of time that chaos doesn’t mean failure, and some of the best photos happen in between the wild moments.

3. A little help goes a long way

Even just helping the kids get dressed or packing snacks can lower your stress levels big time and when you’re calm, the whole session goes smoother. Let him know that his support doesn’t have to be huge, but it does matter.

4. It’s short and sweet

My sessions aren’t long, drawn-out marathons. Most family photo sessions are wrapped up in an hour, especially my seasonal mini sessions. Remind him that it’s a quick moment in the grand scheme of things.

5. Adult bribes are fair game

If you’re pulling out treats or toys for the kids, don’t be afraid to offer your husband a little incentive too. His favorite dinner after? A post-session cocktail? A night off from bedtime routine? Hey, we all like something to look forward to.

6. Tell him you appreciate him

This one’s simple but powerful. Let him know you see his effort. That even if this isn’t his thing, you’re so grateful he’s doing it anyway. Remind him that these photos aren’t just about the here and now, they’re about looking back, years from now, and seeing this season of your life frozen in time.

As a family photographer based here in the Inland Empire, I can say with full confidence: when dads come into a session relaxed and ready to just go with the flow, it makes a huge difference. Not just in the photos, but in the whole experience.

So yeah, you can totally send him this post. Just nudge him with love, and maybe mention the after-session tacos.

And if you're still needing to book your family session, reach out anytime. I’d love to help you freeze these fleeting, beautiful moments—without the stress.

With love & grace,

Heidi
