How to Show Up Calm, Confident, and Camera-Ready for Your Motherhood Photos - Redlands, CA

As a motherhood and family photographer based in the Inland Empire, I’ve had the joy of photographing so many beautiful mama moments over the last 10 years. From snuggly newborns to full-blown toddler chaos, I've captured it all. And I’ll be the first to say: no session is ever perfect. But that’s never the goal.

Motherhood sessions (also called mommy and me sessions) are all about connection, not perfection. The goal isn’t to get everyone looking at the camera and smiling in unison for every photo, it’s to freeze this exact season of motherhood in a way that feels honest and real. That said, there are a few simple things you can do ahead of time to help the session go more smoothly. Here’s how to prep in a way that keeps things relaxed, flexible, and as low-stress as possible:

1. Plan for a later bedtime (just for today)

All of my sessions are scheduled around sunset, since that’s when the light is softest and most beautiful. Depending on the time of year, that might overlap with your little one’s normal bedtime. If you can, consider letting them nap later that day, or sneak in a late afternoon car nap. A little extra rest can go a long way in helping your child stay happy during our quick 20-minute session.

2. Skip the outfit until you arrive

This one’s especially helpful if your baby or toddler is under two. Blowouts, spit-up, snack accidents...they’re real, and they almost always happen after you’ve carefully dressed your child. If possible, wait to dress them until you arrive at the location. I always leave a few minutes at the start of the session for last-minute touches anyway.

3. A gentle bribe never hurts

If your child is old enough to understand, you might want to bring up a little reward they can look forward to. A special treat, a favorite snack after the session, or a small toy they’ve been eyeing. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, just enough to make them feel excited and part of the plan.

4. Bring a brush and baby wipes

This sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference. A quick swipe with baby wipes to remove boogers, crumbs, or leftover lunch, and a once-over with a brush can help freshen up your little one in just seconds.

5. Let go of the pressure

The truth? Motherhood sessions can feel a little chaotic in real time. There may be wiggling, clinging, pouting, and not a lot of “posed” perfection. But trust me when I say, those messy in-between moments are where the magic lives. I’m a documentary-style photographer, so I’ll always guide you gently, help you feel comfortable, and yes, try to grab that sweet smile or eye contact. But mostly? I want to capture what’s real. The snuggles, the giggles, the way your child holds your hand or rests their head on your shoulder.

6. Coordinate, don’t match

For clothing, I always recommend choosing coordinating tones over matching outfits. Think soft earth tones, denim, muted florals, or neutrals that flow together naturally. Avoid neon or super bright colors as these can cast odd tones onto skin and aren’t always editable. My favorite sessions always have a soft, timeless color palette that lets you be the focus, not the clothes.

7. Be present, not perfect

Your motherhood session will go by fast..just 20 minutes, and we’re done. So try to be present. Laugh with your kids, snuggle them close, and trust me to guide you through the process. I’ll give you direction when needed and create space for genuine moments when they show up. You don’t need to control the outcome, you just need to show up with love.

Whether you’re joining me for a motherhood session in Yucaipa, a sunset shoot in Beaumont, or an orchard session near Redlands, I’ll be there to help you feel relaxed and confident every step of the way. These photos are for you—to look back on and remember how it felt to be their everything in this season.
