Why I Love Photographing Milestones Beyond High School in the Inland Empire

Celebrating the Wins That Matter Most

A few weeks ago I had the honor of photographing a graduation session for someone really special, my cousin’s daughter. She was graduating from a trade school this summer and let me just say, I’m so here for it.

Not everyone takes the traditional university path, and honestly, I think that’s a good thing (hello, me!). College isn’t the only option, and it definitely isn’t the best fit for everyone. Between the sky-high costs, the years of general ed classes, and all the time spent not actually learning your chosen field, it just doesn’t work for every student or every family.

That’s why I love what trade schools offer. It’s focused, it's fast, and it gets you hands-on in your actual career path so much sooner. I think that’s something worth celebrating.

A Warm Evening with the People Who Matter

We shot this session at one of my favorite outdoor locations in Yucaipa, and for a late June evening, the weather was so kind to us. Mid-80s and that soft breeze that makes everything feel a little slower and sweeter.

The light that evening? Total magic. That last 15 minutes of golden hour gave us the kind of glow that feels like a warm hug. It was the kind of session where everything just clicks, great weather, a beautiful setting, and a whole lot of love in front of the camera.

Before we headed out to shoot, my cousin and her daughter came over to my house to hang out for a bit. We caught up on life, laughed, shared stories, relaxed, it was just easy. They were totally prepped too, with a few outfit changes and all the classic grad session details like the cap, gown, and stole. (Did you know that thing that goes around your neck is called a stole? I had to look it up lol!!!) It made the shoot feel thoughtful without being overly staged.

More Than Just Photos

What I loved most about this session wasn’t just the setting or the light or even the outfits. It was that they showed up for this milestone. Even though her daughter is a young adult now, my cousin made the long drive out to be there and make this feel special. That kind of support matters. And being able to capture it for them means a lot to me.

I’m a big fan of celebrating your people. Whether they’re five or twenty-five. Life moves fast, and these moments deserve more than a quick phone snap. They deserve to be remembered with intention and care.

Thinking About a Grad Session?

If someone you love is reaching a big milestone, graduation, a new job, completing something hard, it’s worth capturing. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Just real, honest, and full of heart.

Whether it’s a trade school grad, high school senior, or even a younger sibling who’s just proud to be “moving up,” I’d love to help you mark the moment.

Reach out if you want to talk through ideas. I’m always happy to help you plan something that feels true to your people.

With love & grace,

Heidi
