Why Including Pets in Your Family Photos Actually Works (When You Do It Right) - Beaumont, CA

If you’ve ever thought about bringing your dog to a family photo session but talked yourself out of it, you’re not alone. Most people worry it’s going to be chaotic. That their dog won’t listen, won’t sit still, or will somehow make the whole session harder. And yes, pets can add a little unpredictability.

But they’re also part of your family. And when you include them the right way, it doesn’t feel chaotic. It actually makes your photos feel more like your real life.

A lot of families I work with here in the Inland Empire bring their dogs for outdoor sessions with me in places like Redlands, Yucaipa, and Beaumont. And honestly, it usually works better than they expect.

The key is not trying to make your dog behave perfectly the entire time.

Just like with kids, the more you try to control every second, the harder it gets. What works better is building the session around small moments. Letting your dog be part of it, but not the center of everything the whole time.

We’ll usually start with a few photos that include your pet while everyone is still fresh. That way you get those shots early, and then we can shift focus if needed without any pressure. It also helps to bring someone along who can step in when your dog needs a break. A friend, a family member, anyone who can hold a leash or take them for a quick walk while we continue with the rest of your session.

That alone takes a lot of the stress off.

Treats, a favorite toy, and a little patience go a long way too. Not in a way where you’re constantly bribing your dog, but just enough to keep things moving without frustration. And just like with everything else, your energy matters. If you’re relaxed about it, your dog will pick up on that. If you’re stressed and trying to make everything perfect, they’ll feel that too.

The goal isn’t perfect behavior. It’s capturing your family as it actually is. Because a few years from now, the fact that your dog was pulling a little or sitting slightly off to the side won’t matter. What will matter is that they were there.

If you’re in Beaumont, Yucaipa, Redlands, or anywhere in the Inland Empire and you’ve been debating whether to include your pet in your family photos, you don’t have to overthink it.

We can plan it in a way that keeps things simple, so your session still feels easy and your photos still feel like you. Reach out to me here.
