Including Pets in Your Family Photos — Yes, You Should!

Tips for a Smooth Session with Your Furry Family Member - Redlands, Ca

As a family photographer based in the Inland Empire, I absolutely love when clients bring their pets to a session. After all, our furry friends are a big part of our lives and they belong in the photos just as much as anyone else. Whether you're planning a family session in Redlands, a mini session in Yucaipa, or something playful in Beaumont, bringing your pet along can add such a fun, heartwarming dynamic. But to keep things stress-free, it’s important to plan ahead.

Here are a few tips to help your session go smoothly when you include your pet.

Bring a Leash — And Choose the Right Kind

Even if your pet is well-trained, a leash is a must. It helps keep them safe and nearby during the session, and ensures we can quickly transition between shots. Opt for a thin leash in a neutral color. Something easy to tuck away or edit out if needed. Or, if it does need to say in the photo, it's not a bright color that will throw off the look of your pictures.

Invite a Helper

Having a friend or relative come along solely to care for your pet is one of the best ways to stay relaxed during your session. If you plan to take a few photos without your pet, it helps to have someone who can hang back with them so they’re not left alone in the car or running around nearby. A second set of hands makes a big difference, trust me. Because I need to focus on capturing your family, I unfortunately won't be able to keep a handle on your pup.

Don’t Forget the Treats

Just like kids, pets often respond well to a little incentive. Bring along their favorite treats to help keep them still and focused when we need it. It’s a simple way to reward them while helping us get those sweet, intentional shots.

Pack Their Favorite Toy

A squeaky toy is one of my go-to tricks for getting pets to look at the camera. It helps capture their attention, brings out fun expressions, and can even make for some adorable action shots. Noisy toys are ideal, but anything your pet loves will work. Think of it as their comfort item for the session.

Bonus Tip: Let the Session Be What It Is

This is a big one. Pets, like kids, can be unpredictable. And that’s okay. If your dog decides to lay down in the middle of the shot, we’ll roll with it. If your cat wants to be held the whole time, we’ll lean into that closeness. The beauty of lifestyle photography is that it captures real connection, not perfection.

Why I Love Pets in Photos

Some of my favorite memories during sessions come from the unscripted moments between families and their pets. From nose boops and tail wags, to the way your child gently holds your dog’s paw, these are the details that matter most. As your Inland Empire family photographer, I’m here to help you capture all the love, paws and all.
