Redlands, CA. - Winter Maternity Session
This session took place at a park in Redlands on one of those Southern California winter evenings where it’s cool, but still comfortable enough to be outside without feeling miserable. The kind of weather that makes you grateful for mild winters, which honestly works perfectly for maternity sessions.
This wasn’t just a maternity session though. It was a mom, a dad, and their little one stepping into a new version of their family. That in-between stage where everything still feels familiar, but you know it’s about to change. If you’ve never done a maternity session before, especially in the winter months here in the Inland Empire, it’s usually a lot more relaxed than people expect. There’s this idea that you’re going to be standing in one spot, posing the whole time, but that’s not really how it goes. We walk a little, we pause when the light is right, we let your kid be a kid, and we build everything around that instead of trying to control it.
With a five year old, the session naturally becomes a mix of movement and fun moments. One minute he’s holding onto mom and talking about the baby, the next he’s running a few steps ahead and coming right back. Those shifts are actually what make the photos feel real. You don’t need him to stand still the whole time. You just need him to be himself.
Winter light here in Redlands is softer, which helps everything feel a little more calm and natural. The sun sits lower, the tones are warmer, and you’re not dealing with the harsh brightness we get in the summer. It gives us more flexibility with timing too, so sessions don’t feel rushed. Parks and locations are usually not busy like it can be in the summer or fall months.
As for what to wear, winter maternity sessions in Southern California are less about heavy layers and more about texture and comfort. Long dresses, soft knits, something that moves a little when you walk. Nothing stiff, nothing that feels like you’re trying too hard. You want to feel like yourself, just a slightly more put-together version.
The biggest thing I always tell moms going into these sessions is that you don’t need to show up feeling perfect. You don’t need your kid to behave a certain way, and you don’t need your husband to suddenly love being in front of a camera. My job is to guide you through it in a way that feels easy, so you’re not thinking about what to do every second.
What ends up mattering most in these sessions isn’t the perfect pose. It’s the way your son leans into you without thinking. The way your partner looks at you when you’re not paying attention. The way this season feels before the baby arrives and everything shifts again.
If you’re in Beaumont, Yucaipa, Redlands, or anywhere in the Inland Empire and you’re thinking about documenting this stage, winter is honestly one of the best times to do it. It’s quieter, the light is softer, and the whole experience tends to feel a little more laid back.
And if you’re worried about how it’s all going to come together, you don’t have to figure that out on your own. I’ll walk you through everything so by the time your session comes around, it just feels like showing up and being with your family.
If you’re ready for a maternity session that feels simple and natural, you can reach out and we’ll start planning something that fits your family.
See you soon,
Heidi
