Incorporating Childhood Memories Into Your Senior Session

Senior photos usually focus on what’s ahead. Graduation, college, and everything that comes next tend to take center stage. But there is another side to this season that does not always get talked about as much, and that is everything they are leaving behind.

This session in Yucaipa took a different approach. Instead of focusing only on the future, we built part of the session around childhood. He brought along his Toy Story characters and used them as a way to reflect on a chapter that is coming to a close. It could have easily felt overdone or too themed, but that was not the case at all. The way we approached it kept everything simple and grounded. The toys were not the focus of every image, but they were present in a way that added context and told a fuller story.

There is something familiar about the idea of growing up alongside those characters. For a lot of families, Toy Story has always been tied to childhood, which made it a natural fit for this kind of session. As he prepares to leave for college, it created a connection between where he started and where he is headed.

We chose a location in Yucaipa that gave us open space and a more relaxed setting. That kind of environment works well for sessions like this because it allows the senior to move naturally without feeling restricted. It also helps keep the focus on the story instead of the background.

For families in Yucaipa and throughout the Inland Empire, this is something to think about when planning senior photos. Not every session has to follow the same structure. Including something from childhood, whether it is a favorite movie, a hobby, or something they have held onto over the years, can add another layer without making the session feel complicated.

The key is to keep it simple and personal. The goal is not to recreate something perfectly, but to include pieces of their life that still matter to them as they step into something new. Senior photos mark a transition, and that transition goes both directions. It is about what they are stepping into, but also what they are slowly letting go of. Capturing both sides of that is what makes a session feel complete.
