A Story of Strength, Recovery, and Finishing What She Started
Some sessions naturally carry more weight than others. This one was about celebrating a milestone, but it was also about everything that happened behind the scenes to make that milestone possible. When this mama reached out about graduation photos, she was finishing her master’s in nursing at West Coast University. On the surface, it looked like a season of accomplishment and transition into her next chapter. But her path to this moment was far from simple.
In November 2024, while she was still in the middle of her program and planning her wedding, she was diagnosed with an acoustic schwannoma. The tumor started on her vestibular and cochlear nerve and grew rapidly, eventually requiring surgery. It was the kind of diagnosis that could have completely derailed everything she had been working toward.
Instead, she kept going. She continued her coursework and clinicals all the way up until the day before surgery, finishing an entire term before taking a short break to recover. Just a few weeks later, she returned to school and continued forward. That kind of determination is hard to put into words.
Recovery came with its own set of challenges. She experienced months of dizziness and relied on physical therapy to regain her balance. She dealt with ongoing pain from occipital neuralgia and is still managing that to this day. The surgery also resulted in hearing loss, which meant adjusting to daily life in a completely new way. Even with all of that, she moved forward, one step at a time.
Her family was a big part of what kept her moving forward through all of it. Her husband and two children were her biggest supporters. She shared that she is the first on either side of her family to earn a master’s degree, and even when things didn’t go according to plan, she never considered giving up. With two little ones watching her, supporting her, and counting on her, and that mattered. This wasn’t just about finishing school. It was about following through on something she started, no matter what tried to get in the way.
Now working in labor and delivery, she has stepped into a role that requires both strength and compassion. It felt fitting to photograph her at this stage, not just as a graduate, but as someone who has already walked through more than most do on their path into their career. She wanted a graduation session, mixed in with family photos to celebrate and commemorate this once in a lifetime experience.
When people begin searching for graduation photos in the Inland Empire, they are often thinking about marking the end of school with a few meaningful images. What many do not realize is how much more these sessions can hold. Graduation photos can represent the full story, including the parts that were difficult, uncertain, and unseen by others.
As a photographer serving Yucaipa and the surrounding Inland Empire, sessions like this are a reminder that photos are not just about what is visible. They are about the story behind the moment and the journey that brought someone to where they are today.
If you are planning graduation photos in Yucaipa or nearby areas, your session does not have to follow a specific formula. It can reflect your path, your experience, and the version of this milestone that feels true to you. If you’re starting to think about documenting this season, I would be glad to help you do that in a way that feels natural and true to your story. Reach out to me here.
