How to Keep Graduation Photos Natural and Not Overdone
Cap and gown photos are one of those things most families know they want, but are not always sure how to approach. A lot of what you see tends to feel very posed or overly traditional, and it can be hard to picture how those images can still feel natural. Scroll down past this article to see photos now. 👇
This senior session in Redlands is a good example of how to keep that part of the session simple while still documenting the milestone. We were shooting in a field of yellow flowers at sunset, which already gave us a soft, relaxed setting to work with. Instead of treating the cap and gown as a completely separate portion of the session, we incorporated it in a way that fit right in with everything else.
She paired her cap and gown with a white dress, which helped keep the overall look light and consistent with the rest of her outfits. It did not feel overly formal or disconnected from the environment. That small choice made a big difference in how the images came together.
One of the things I always keep in mind during this part of a session is not over-directing. Graduation photos do not need a long list of poses to feel complete. A few simple prompts, natural movement, and letting the senior settle into the moment usually creates images that feel much more genuine.
This is especially important in a setting like Redlands, where outdoor locations can do a lot of the work for you. The open space, soft light, and natural tones help create images that feel easy and not forced. When everything works together, the cap and gown becomes part of the story instead of the only focus.
For families in Riverside, Corona, and Lake Elsinore that are traveling to Redlands to see me, it helps to think of cap and gown photos as just one piece of the session. They are important, but they do not have to take over. Including them alongside other outfits allows you to capture both the milestone and the personality of your senior at the same time. The goal is to walk away with images that feel like your senior, not just a checklist of graduation photos. When it is done this way, you get a mix of images that document the moment while still feeling relaxed and true to who they are right now.
If you are planning senior photos in Redlands or nearby areas and want graduation images that feel natural and easy, I would be glad to help you create a session that brings all of those pieces together. Reach out to me here.
